Why Choose FRIO?

FRIO is different from other medication coolers because it never needs ice packs or refrigeration. This differentiator cuts the invisible chain to refrigeration, allowing a person who is dependent on insulin the convenience and freedom that he could never possibly enjoy before.

Our Mission

Save lives with insulin cooling.

Core Values

Innovation, compassion, community, life-saving commitment, responsibility, preparedness advocacy.

Puerto Rico, Maria, and FRIO

FRIO stands out from other medication coolers as it doesn’t require ice or refrigeration, offering unprecedented freedom to insulin-dependent individuals. Its value was proven during disasters like Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, where it ensured life-saving medications like insulin remained cool without power. Over 25,000 FRIOs were distributed in Puerto Rico post-hurricane, effectively addressing the challenge of maintaining insulin efficacy for the island’s diabetic population, demonstrating FRIO’s critical role in emergency preparedness.

This summarizes our rewarding experience in achieving our goal.

In the aftermath of the hurricane, we tried contacting major organizations for assistance but faced delays with larger entities. Direct shipping of FRIOs to Puerto Rico was also not viable initially due to disrupted courier services and distribution challenges, preventing us from ensuring the FRIOs reached those in need.

We contacted the Diabetes coalition of JDRF, ADA, and Insulin for Life. Though we aimed for a broader collaboration, we donated a significant number of FRIOs, which Insulin for Life distributed in the island.

The need for action was urgent. As media highlighted the crisis, we were inundated with offers to help. Collaboration between JDRF’s Linda Popky, Carb DM’s Tamar Sofer-Geri, and our own Lisa Katzki led to a fundraising effort on Carb DM’s site, quickly raising funds for 1,000 FRIOs for Puerto Rico. Yankee All-Star Jorge Posada and Dr. Luis Perez of the Puerto Rico Diabetes Association facilitated transportation and distribution.

Grassroots and Corporate Support for Puerto Rico’s Emergency Needs

Numerous established and new grassroots organizations nationwide also took similar actions. They also raised funds from hundreds of generous donors and sponsored FRIOs to be sent to Puerto Rico.

The private sector also rose to the occasion. A healthcare company chartered a private plane and sent 1,000 FRIOs and other emergency supplies to its constituents in Puerto Rico. The international pharmaceutical company, Sanofi, sponsored 15,000 FRIOs – to be handed out to those in Puerto Rico who needed them!

As services resumed, capitalism contributed, with a major distributor buying thousands of FRIOs for island pharmacies and new distributors emerging to meet the need.

Being part of this solution was rewarding, underscoring the importance of emergency preparedness for those reliant on temperature-sensitive medications. If not now, when?
